How long will coronavirus pandemic last?

In Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not given a specific timeline on how long the lockdowns and quarantines might last, but said recently that these measures could last for “weeks or even months.”

Many experts are saying the public can expect to see restrictions until June or even July.

The ban on air travel into Canada by foreign nationals, for example, will last until at least June 30, according to the Canadian government.

Experts say that based on the models of other countries, like South Korea or Taiwan, Canadians should be prepared for at least three more months of staying at home and limiting public gatherings.

In the US

Many experts say that the outbreak will likely peak, and then level off. Covid-19 has been tracked in the US since February, and current projections suggest that the coronavirus will peak in mid to late April. These projections are considering that the public continues to practice social distancing and self-quarantine and self-isolation measures that have been put into place.

In an interview, former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, shared that what's happened in other parts of the world could suggest what will happen in the US. "If you look at other countries, the time between the implementation of the most restrictive measures, like lockdown and significant social distancing, to when they hit their peak in the epidemic, it’s anywhere from four to six weeks,” Dr. Gottlieb said.

In the UK

"The extent of globalisation and international connectivity is such that the ‘end game’ is so difficult to predict with any certainty.”, says Michael Head, senior research fellow in global health at Southampton University. Head also said estimates are made particularly difficult because coronavirus is a novel virus. “The difficulty with any modelling or future predictions is this is an entirely new virus, and the scale of this pandemic is unprecedented in living memory.”
