Avon - The history

Avon is one of the most popular direct selling beauty company, based on multi-level marketing, working worldwide. The story has started back in 1886, when New York's book salesman, David H. McConnel, decided to start his career as a retailer of perfume and other toiletry products. At the beginning, the company was called California Perfume Company, as McConnel's partner was from California and suggested the name, with the first office based in New York. In 1939 it was renamed to Avon Products Inc.

Avon products have become very popular in America in no time. People loved the possibility of shopping for beauty products without leaving home. The door-to-door selling evolved into direct selling and started hiring ambassadors responsible for distributing the catalogs and merchandising the products, and this business model is still the core of the company. At the end of 1920, Canada was also involved in the business. Seeing the big potential, McConnel started expansion on the other continents, and in 1959 first foreign offices started to open. The company was quickly recognized in England and Germany, so the company expanded even more.

Nowadays Avon is the fifth biggest beauty company, distributing their products by direct-selling. It is well known all over the world, but the biggest profit comes from Russia and China, where Avon is a leader in beauty products merchandising.
