Gatineau police set up roadblocks on the Quebec side of the Alexandra Bridge on April 1, 2020, with the intention to stop non-essential travel into the province.
Essential trips only include travel for essential work, medical appointments or for humanitarian reasons.
Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin said it's "hard to say" whether the measures go too far, considering the spread of COVID-19 elsewhere in the world. "Now is the good time to be disciplined," he said. "Now is the good time to take strict measures."
Fines between $1,000 to $6,000 may be imposed on people who refuse to cooperate, Gatineau police said.
